Free bus travel in England

If you are a senior citizen aged 60 or over or registered disabled, you are entitled to free off-peak bus travel throughout England.

To benefit, you will need a concessionary travel pass, which must be shown to the bus driver on each journey.

The concessionary bus scheme is managed by your local district or borough council. For further details, including how to apply, contact:

Off-peak travel is anytime between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and bank holidays.

Exceptions to this are:

  • Eastbourne, Hastings, Rother and Wealden residents can use their concessionary passes from 9am, Monday to Friday.
  • Lewes residents can only use their passes from 9.30am.

This information applies to journeys starting in each relevant district or borough boundary. Hastings Borough Council and Rother District Council have also extended the hours for passes from other boroughs to 9am too, although this is not the case for other local councils within East Sussex.
