Lewes Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ)

In the Lewes Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), parking is controlled by bays or yellow lines. There are five sub-zones in Lewes (A, B, C, D, E) with a further sub-zone (F) in Falmer.

Parking controls operate:

  • 8am – 6pm, Monday to Saturday in sub-zones B, C and D
  • 8am – 6pm, Monday to Friday in sub-zones A and E

In Falmer, controls operate 9am – 4pm, Monday to Friday, from September to May. Outside of these times, there is no charge for parking in bays in sub-zone F.

Signs at the entry to each sub-zone show the times of control.

Anyone parking in a bay will need to display either a permit or a pay and display ticket. Pay and display tickets can be purchased from a nearby machine. Signs alongside parking bays show if a bay is for:

  • permit holders
  • pay and display tickets
  • dual use – permit holders (resident, business, day permit or blue badge) and pay and display tickets.

Other types of bays are reserved for:

  • blue badge holders only
  • loading or unloading.

Residents

If you live within the Lewes CPZ, you can buy up to two permits to help you park closer to where you live. Find out which sub-zone you live in and how to buy a permit for your household on the residents' parking permit page.

Businesses

Businesses within the CPZ that can demonstrate that a vehicle is essential for making daily deliveries or visits, can apply for up to two permits. For more information about applying for a permit and where this allows you to park, go to the business parking permit page.

Visiting Lewes

Visitors to the town can park in:

  • public car parks
  • pay and display bays
  • dual use bays

by displaying a valid ticket from a ticket machine. Different charges apply to car parks as well as to the inner, outer and intermediate zones of the CPZ, and for commercial vehicles.

Find out where you can park and what the charges are on the map of public parking in Lewes town centre.

Day permits

Day permits are valid until 10am the following morning and can be purchased from the Lewes Parking Shop by:

Residents

Residents can purchase day permits for the sub-zone they live in, for their visitors to use, even if they do not hold a resident parking permit themselves. See charges below or, for more information, see the resident parking permit page.

Hotels and guest houses

Hotels and guest houses in the CPZ can buy visitor permits for their guests. Stocks of day permits can be purchased in advance.

Healthcare workers and carers

Healthcare workers and carers can use day permits to carry out their work throughout the CPZ. Applications for permits are only accepted from:

  • managers of Primary Care/Health Trusts
  • care agencies.

Applications from individual employees are not accepted.

Tradespeople and contractors

If you are a tradesperson or contractor working in the CPZ, you can purchase day permits on a daily or weekly basis. Day permits will allow you to park in all permit holder and dual use bays, and in all sub-zones of the CPZ (including Falmer), with no time limit.

Residents or their contractors can apply for a temporary suspension of a parking bay, to accommodate equipment or a skip. Contact the Lewes Parking Shop for more information.

Blue badge holders

If you hold a valid blue badge, you can normally park free of charge in any permit holder, dual use bay or disabled bay in the CPZ. The maximum stay of two hours in commercial zone parking bays also applies to blue badge holders. Blue badge holders can also normally park for up to three hours on single or double yellow lines unless there is a loading restriction in force and as long as the vehicle is not causing an obstruction. You should clearly display your arrival time on the clock, alongside your blue badge.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles can park free of charge in any permit, dual use or designated motorcycle bay within the CPZ, except disabled bays. Motorcycles should park at right angles to the kerb. Motorcycles not parked in this way may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.

Coaches

There are various drop off and pick up points for coaches in the town, as well as two long stay coach parks. Find out more about coach parking in Lewes.
