Parking in Eastbourne – spring 2008 consultation results

The purpose of this initial consultation was to seek comments on the proposals to introduce new parking controls and charges, in Eastbourne town centre controlled parking zone (CPZ) and along part of the seafront.

In July 2008, Cabinet considered a report on this consultation.

The consultation specifically invited comments from local residents on possible changes in certain streets. As a result of your comments, the draft Orders include the suggested changes in West Terrace, South Cliff, Langney Road, Hyde Gardens, Devonshire Place, South Street and some streets south of Compton Street between Devonshire Place and Wilmington Square.

However, the suggested changes in Gildredge Road, Marine Parade and Royal Parade are not included as a majority of the people who responded did not support them.

Many comments received were supportive of effective parking enforcement but many people also objected to paying for parking. However, parking controls are only effective if they are properly enforced and effective enforcement is expensive.

The Police do not want to enforce parking in Eastbourne, therefore any enforcement that we carry out, needs to cover its costs from charges. See our page about Civil Parking Enforcement.

Further consultation

As a result of this initial consultation, we are now carrying out further formal consultation on the draft Traffic Orders.
