Plans for walking

Walking is beneficial to both our health and the environment. Through our walking strategy Stepping Out, we want to encourage you to get around on foot more often, by making walking safer, more convenient and enjoyable. This strategy is currently being updated.

Our objectives

We intend to make pedestrian access a part of all transport decisions.

  • Pedestrians will be considered in all proposals for transport improvements, and accessibility for all will be a requirement in their design.
  • All new developments will be designed with pedestrian routes and access as a priority, including access to car parks and routes to bus stops and railway stations.
  • Shops, workplaces and community facilities will be fully accessible.
  • Public transport interchanges will offer accessible, safe and direct pedestrian routes.

What we plan to do

To make life easier for people on foot we intend to provide:

  • tactile paving to assist the poorly sighted
  • crossings that improve safety and lessen walking distances
  • direct routes with few gradients, steps or other barriers
  • good lighting
  • footpath widening and well-maintained pavements
  • modern bus shelters and bus information systems
  • routes that provide good access to public transport
  • traffic calming schemes.
