Our plans for bus travel

Commercial bus services account for about 75% of bus travel in East Sussex. We work with bus service operators to co-ordinate service changes and promote a stable network.

Our objectives

Our bus strategy contains policies for bus services that meet the daily transport needs of people in East Sussex in both town and rural areas. It takes into account the transport needs of:

  • pupils travelling to and from school
  • people with mobility impairments
  • the elderly
  • those without access to a car in the more deprived and rural areas.

What we plan to do

  • Improve bus priority at junctions, bus lanes and better bus stops.
  • Continue to develop ‘Quality Bus Partnerships’ with local operators in Eastbourne and Hastings.
  • Bid for government funding to improve urban and rural bus services.
  • Identify areas where bus services could be improved and provide funding.
  • Secure development contributions from housing developers towards bus services.
  • Make sure that bus travel is considered when new transport schemes are proposed, such as providing bus lanes and ‘bus-friendly’ traffic calming measures.
  • Work with operators to support the introduction of multi-operator integrated tickets like the successful Freedom and Pathfinder tickets for school children.
  • Work with community and voluntary transport groups.
