Progress by July 2003
- We have developed public service agreement targets for road safety and highway maintenance.
- We are on course to meet road safety targets, eg with local safety schemes and a speed management strategy adopted in June 2003.
- The condition of the principal road networks has been stabilised.
- We have developed area-based strategies for Crowborough and Rye and a speed management strategy.
- The A22 New Route and A27 Polegate bypass have been opened.
- We have introduced a new travel plan for Council staff.
- The Battle Road Quality bus corridor in Hastings is complete.
Specific achievements
In particular, we have:
- repaired 120 km of road in 2002–3
- improved conditions for pedestrians in Newhaven town centre
- developed controlled parking zones for Lewes and Eastbourne, which we will enforce without treating infringement as a criminal offence
- launched a Quality bus partnership in Hastings
- repaired or improved 16 km of footway
- created 36 pedestrian crossings
- put into effect 24 road safety projects, including traffic calming and speed reduction measures
- developed successful 'walking bus' initiatives
- designated or constructed 6 km of cycleway
- produced and distributed information leaflets
- developed an Internet-based, countywide car-share database.
