Green transport
Road transport is the largest source of air pollution in built-up areas. Business mileage contributes to this pollution, as well as to local congestion and other traffic problems.
Congestion on our roads:
- causes delays and health problems
- can cost businesses money
- causes damage to the environment.

Cycling and walking
We are committed to developing transport options in East Sussex and encouraging people to find ways they can get about without a car.
A ’walking bus’ is a scheme where parents walk a group of children to school along a set route. Children are collected along the route and escorted safely into the school. See the school transport pages.
Cycling can help to keep you fit as well as being a cheap and convenient way to get around. Find out about routes and rides in our cycling pages.
More information about cycling and walking in East Sussex is available on the Travelchoice website.
Journey planners
Could you swap your car journey for a walk or a trip on public transport? Using a journey planner can show you different transport options for your journey and help you decide how to get there in the quickest, cheapest and greenest way.
- Traveline – planning journeys on bus, coach or train
- Transport Direct – door-to-door travel information for both public transport and car journeys anywhere in Britain
- Transport for London (TfL) – plan journeys by Tube, bus, train and on foot in London. Also routes in and out of the capital.
Car sharing
Sharing journeys saves money, reduces congestion and cuts carbon dioxide emissions. You can register your journeys and connect with other people travelling along the same local routes at the Travelchoice website.
Greener driving
If you drive a car, there are ways to lessen your impact on the environment while saving you money. Cars with smaller engines or lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions qualify for environmental discounts:
