Getting a PIN for online library services – E-library

You don't need to be a library member to search for books, films and more on our E-library online catalogue.

You'll need a library card and personal identification number (PIN) to use some E-library services, such as downloading ebooks and audiobooks, our online reference library and reserving and renewing online.

If you don't have a library card or have lost your card, see how to join your library.

Ask for a PIN by phone, visit us or use our online form

To ask for your PIN, library members can phone 0345 60 80 196 or use our online form – we just need to know your library card number and contact details.

You can also visit your local library to ask for your PIN. You will need to bring your library card with you. When you confirm your address details, we will give you a PIN immediately.

Sending your PIN

Your PIN is confidential, so we will send it to you using our secure email system (called SecureMail) rather than ordinary email.

You can also choose to receive your PIN by post. We cannot tell you a PIN over the phone.

Why do I need a PIN?

Your PIN lets you reserve and renew online, and change some of your contact details. You can also access a wide range of online reference resources, including national newspapers.

Changing your membership details

After you've got your PIN, sign into the E-library to update your phone number, email address and PIN and choose to receive reservation notices by email.

To update your name or address, please visit your local library with proof of your new name and signature or address, such as a utility bill or driving licence.
