Membership is free. You can join at any of our libraries and we will give you a library card and PIN straightaway. You can use your card at any East Sussex library, and also to renew, reserve, download books and search databases online.

Full and standard library membership

  • Full membership
    You can borrow the maximum number of items if you provide proof of your name and address, such as a utility bill or driving licence. Children will need a parent or guardian to sign their library card.
  • Standard membership
    You can borrow four items if you give proof of name, such as a credit card. Over 16s can borrow one audiobook, DVD or CD and use the library computers.
  • Children under 16
    Children aged 8 to 15 who visit the library on their own can join as a standard member. A letter will be sent to their parent or guardian to say they've joined the library. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult member when they join. See information for children.

Special membership options

  • Home library service
    If you have difficulty reaching your nearest library, are disabled or a carer, please contact us for help. See library services for people with disabilities.
  • Foster carers
    You can ask for a special library card for all the children in your care. Overdue, lost or damaged books are exempt from fines. Normal rules for children's cards apply for audiobooks, videos and DVDs. To apply, please visit your local library taking with you evidence of your status as a foster carer.
  • Playgroups and childminders
    You can borrow extra books with our playgroup book boxes or under fives group ticket. See services for playgroups and childminders.

Changing your membership details

You can change your phone number, email address and PIN online using our E-library.

To change your name and address, please visit your local library with proof of your new name, signature or address.

Lost library cards

If you've lost your library card, please bring some identification to your library and we'll replace your card for a small charge – see our fees and charges.
