Library friends groups

What is a library friends group?

Friends of libraries groups are independent groups of volunteers who support and promote their local library through various activities, such as:

  • fund raising
  • voluntary work
  • raising the profile of the library in the community
  • encouraging use of library facilities
  • arranging social and literary events
  • giving ideas for developing the library service and its buildings
  • taking part in consultation on major local and national library strategies and other issues.

They function independently of the library service, with their own constitution, funds and objectives, but work in close cooperation with library staff.
