What is Oxford English Dictionary Online?
The OED is generally accepted as the most authoritative and comprehensive dictionary of English in the world. It is a historical dictionary, covering changes in meaning and the development of English. It includes:
- entries on the evolution of more than 600,000 words over the last 1,500 years
- 2.5 million quotations from classic literature, periodicals, film scripts and pop songs and more
- find the first recorded use of words such as ‘mobile phone'.
Crossword solvers can search for words with wildcards (using a question mark for missing letters) and by their definitions.
