Searching the Internet

Search engines and directories

The following are recommended services for searching for information on the Internet.

All you need to do is type in a word or phrase. If your first attempts are not successful, try narrowing your search by using the 'advanced search' option where available. Don’t forget to put phrases in quotes.

  • Google – a useful place to start. The most popular search engine.
  • Yahoo – a directory compiled by people rather than by computers.
  • Lycos – results include a 'quick search' with an example of the page you have found.
  • Ask – uses several search engines at the same time.
  • Vivisimo – sorts results into categories.

For news and general information about these Internet search tools and how to use them effectively, see the Search engine watch website.
