Getting started on computers and the Internet

Free computers and Internet access

How to get started

If you are a complete beginner, the BBC offers simple courses showing you how to use a computer, the Internet and email.

  • BBC Computer Tutor – for people who don't know how to use a keyboard, mouse or computer screen
  • BBC Webwise – advice on using email, browsing the web, computer viruses and chat rooms

Find tips on searching the Internet and links to search engines and free email on our page computers in libraries.

Using the Internet safely

Internet safety is a real concern for all computer users, and particularly those with responsibility for children or young people.

However, although the Internet introduces new potential dangers, it also brings some fantastic benefits to children and their learning. These need to be balanced against the possible risks.

Find out more about how to stay safe online, and safety features of this site, on our page about safety and security online.

Children’s computers in libraries

Children under 16 can use computers in our libraries if a parent or carer has signed a parental consent form. Children under 8 years old must be supervised at all times.

Please note that content is filtered for children but this is not always effective in blocking unsuitable material.

Computer courses

Our libraries offer Learndirect computer courses covering information technology, business and management, and basic English and maths. Local colleges also provide courses.
