Storytelling packs for people with disabilities – Bag Books

Who the packs are for

Bag Books are multi-sensory storytelling packs for families, carers and respite centres to use with severely disabled children, young people and adults.

They help enrich the lives and support the learning and development of:

  • people with severe learning difficulties or autism
  • children who have language delay
  • younger children with visual impairment.

What is in a pack

Each pack contains a set of A3 cards with objects on them, which engage the senses of sight, sound, touch, smell and motion.

The packs also contain a storyboard unique to each object. The story is told interactively through actions and emotions, rather than words and pictures, to make it more absorbing. For instance, a smell will capture the attention, or a quiet sound will encourage concentration.

For more information, visit the Bag Books website.

Borrowing the packs from libraries

Library members can borrow a Bag Books pack for three weeks, free of charge.

Please note, the packs are kept at our County Library Store, which is not open to the public. You can reserve them for free on our E-library to collect at any library.

If you don't have a library card, see our page on How to join your library.

Training and storytimes

To help you get the best out of the storytelling packs, library staff offer training for families, carers and respite centres on how to use them.

You can also ask us to provide a Bag Books storytime for parents and children in any of our libraries.
