Finding books in libraries

Books and other items in East Sussex libraries are organised using a combination of subject category letters and a reference number known as Dewey Decimal Classification.

Our E-library online catalogue refers to these as the shelfmark.

Fiction uses just the category letters. The topics are different for adults and children.

Non-fiction uses the category letter and the Dewey number. For example, Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island has the shelfmark L 914.104

This applies in most libraries, although bigger libraries file their non-fiction by the Dewey number only because their collections are so large.
