'At the house of the magician' by Mary Hooper

Lucy has been forced to run away from home, fearing for her safety at the hands of her drunken father. She becomes a maid in the house of Dr Dee, court magician to Elizabeth I.

Dr Dee is a real historical figure. If you love the Tudor period and want to feel it come alive, then this is a really good read. Plots, intrigue, hiding in priest’s holes, black magic and mysterious people with all the colour and glamour of Elizabeth’s reign are in this book. Mary Hooper uses real places, people and events to construct an exciting work of fiction.

Recommended for children and teenagers over 10-years-old.
