'The silver donkey'
'The silver donkey'

'The silver donkey' by Sonya Hartnett

Near a small coastal town in France during World War I, two sisters discover a blinded and shell-shocked English soldier hiding out in the woods. Escaping from the battle fields, he is determined to find his way home to his dying brother in England.

The girls realise they cannot help him alone and ask their brother Pascal to help. During the few days that they hide him he tells them four stories about a donkey. His good luck charm – a silver donkey – inspires the wonderful stories.

This is a simple gentle story, wonderfully written, representing a wide range of emotions and experiences. You desperately want a happy ending for the young soldier. A fable suitable for anyone aged 8–80.
