What happens in our book award
Every year we ask children in Year 5 and 6 to vote for your favourite fiction book recently published in paperback. The shortlist of five books below was carefully chosen with the help of children from several local schools.
Children took part in lots of activites for the award:
- read and discussed the books from January to April
- met the authors
- wrote reviews on this website
- attended our award ceremony at Hailsham Pavilion in June.

'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell Boyce - Winner
Liam is too big for his boots. And his football strip. And his school blazer. But being tall has its advantages – he's the only 11-year-old to ever ride the Cosmic rollercoaster and be offered the chance to ride a Porsche. However, things get very confusing when Liam enters a competition against a group of adults, and ends up getting lost – in space!
'How Kirsty Jenkins stole the elephant' by Elen Caldecott
Kirsty Jenkins adores her grandfather's allotment, and promises him she will look after it when he dies. But when horrible Mr Thomas insists it should go to the next person on the waiting list, Kirsty and her half-siblings come up with a daring plan – to 'borrow' the stuffed elephant from the museum in a last-ditch attempt to gain Mr Thomas' attention and understanding.
'The TV time travellers' by Pete Johnson
Zac and Izzy win a place on a new reality TV show, but they have no idea where they're going or what to expect. They must live as if it's 1939 and the start of World War Two. One by one they will be voted out by the viewing public. It's a hard life and problems occur, but everyone will be stunned when the live final arrives.
'Shark Island' by David Miller
Hanna, Ned and their parents are on the holiday of a lifetime on the paradise island of Kaitan. But Hanna and Ned face a nightmare fight for survival on a remote island after their parents are kidnapped by modern-day pirates. It will take luck, cunning and every drop of their courage to escape and get Mum and Dad back.
'Dark summer' by Ali Sparkes
Eddie is scared – he's got lost in the famous caves at Wookey Hole and doesn't know how to get out. But then he is rescued by Gwerran, a strange girl with pale skin, huge violet eyes and white hair. Eddie begins to think she is a ghost. Together they hatch a plot to save his elderly relative and to reunite him with his long lost love in the mysterious world beneath the caves.
