Self-help books – the ‘Well Read’ book prescription scheme
If you are struggling with emotional or personal issues, books can help you resolve some of your problems.
Many people experience psychological problems or emotional difficulties at some time during their lives. One in four consultations with GPs are for problems such as:
- stress or worry
- depression, anxiety or panic attacks
- obsessive behaviour
- confidence and self-esteem issues
- managing anger
- dealing with traumatic events.
If you live in Hastings and St Leonards, your doctor may recommend you read the books in the ‘Well Read’ book prescription scheme. These books offer advice, support and step by step treatment plans, and often ask the reader to complete exercises and keep diaries.
How the scheme works
Mental health professionals have put together a list of books which they highly recommend to people who come to them for help. Health professionals in Hastings may offer sessions to help you work through these books. See our Well Read booklist.
The books are kept at Hastings library. Books which are already on loan can be reserved free of charge on presentation of the booklist to library staff.
It’s easy to join the library – just take proof of your name, address and signature to the library and you can join right away. For more about joining, borrowing and getting the most from your library, see our page on using your library.
What if I still need more help?
We realise that these books might not be able to completely resolve your problems. If you still feel you need more help don’t hesitate to contact your GP or mental health worker.
