The Keep: history on the move
A new historical resource centre could be built by 2012 if a multi-million pound lottery bid is successful.
The Keep is an exciting and innovative development to house the archives and historical resources of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove dating back over 900 years. The purpose-built centre would be created near Falmer, at Woollards Field.
New public facilities at The Keep will open up access to all of these collections in new and exciting ways, providing a one-stop shop for all our visitors. The centre will be a vibrant community resource providing hands-on and online opportunities for people to investigate their own and local history. It will include rooms and research areas for schools, colleges and university students as well as a range of activities and facilities for all sections of the community.
A joint project board has been set up and we are developing partnerships with Brighton & Hove City Council, the University of Sussex, the Sussex Family History Group and All Ways Learning as well as consulting widely with other organisations and individuals.
As lead partner, the County Council will be making a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in August 2008. News of our progress will be announced later in the year.
