Visiting West Park
West Park is open to the public at all times. Please keep to the paths and avoid the marsh conservation area. A map and further details is available in our:
What you will find
The reserve has a variety of habitats including:
- mixed woodland
- grassland
- an environmentally sensitive marsh
- orchids including the rare southern marsh orchid
- wooded sandstone outcrops
Reserve management
If land isn't managed, most areas would eventually change back into woodland, losing rare species and varied habitats. Managing the nature reserve benefits people as well as wildlife. Some of the tasks we carry out at West Park include:
- removing bracken, birch, willow and bramble scrub
- removing weeds and other species such as ragwort and rhododendron
- planting hedges and trees
- surveying and monitoring species such as orchids, birds and dormice
- providing guided walks and children's activities
- installing and maintaining gates, bridges and boardwalks and clearing paths for visitors.
For more detail on our management of the reserve, see the leaflet above.
Volunteering
Task days are held once a month for anyone who is interested in helping volunteer to preserve and enhance the reserve.
