Register of Public Rights of Way in East Sussex
If a path is used by the public for 20 years or more, it can become a public right of way. Under Section 31(6) of the Highways Act 1980, landowners can deposit maps and statements with us, showing recognised public rights of way over their land. These are added to an official record called the Definitive Map.
This prevents any additional public rights of way being established, from the date the map and statement are deposited. The deposit is valid for 10 years, after which a further statutory declaration is needed.
Below is a list of maps deposited with us since 1995, showing public rights of way.
We also receive applications to alter the Definitive Map, see Definitive Map Modification Orders.
