For art lovers, these three attractions are within a very short distance of each other and provide an interesting contrast – from modern murals to old masters.

Berwick Church

Start your day by visiting St Michael and All Angels at Berwick which is known for its brightly decorated wall panels depicting biblical scenes. These were painted during World War II by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, members of the Bloomsbury group of artists, writers and intellectuals.

  • Where is it? In Berwick village, just off the A27 about eight miles east of Lewes.
  • How do I get there? From the A27, follow the main road through the village and take the turning on the left.
  • Nearest train station: Berwick – approximately one mile away.

Charleston

Having visited Berwick Church, go a couple of miles down the road (towards Lewes) and see Charleston. This farmhouse was the country retreat of the Bloomsbury group and has more examples of Grant and Bell’s unique style of work. It is famous for its extravagant murals, decorated furniture and cottage-style garden. It also has an exhibition gallery, shop and tea room.   • Where is it? Just off the A27 about seven miles east of Lewes, between Firle and Selmeston.
  • How do I get there? Charleston is sign-posted off the A27.
  • Nearest train station: Berwick – approximately one and a half miles away.

Firle Place

Firle Place

For a complete change of style, spend the afternoon browsing the treasures of Firle Place. This historic house is home to a collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain from Europe, as well as some American pieces. It includes works by Raphael, Reynolds and Van Dyck. The house has restricted opening times – please check the Firle Place website for full details (see link below). It has a restaurant which serves lunch and tea when the house is open. Alternatively The Ram Inn in Firle village does food, or you could take a picnic and enjoy the views from Firle Beacon which is only a mile up the road.

  • Where is it? Just off the A27, about three miles east of Lewes on the edge of Firle village.
  • How do I get there? Take the Firle turning off the A27. The entrance to the house is about 100 yards from the main road.
  • Nearest train station: Glynde – approximately one mile away.
  • Cost: There is an entry fee for the house.
