The Ouse Estuary Project

The Ouse Estuary Project is a nature reserve at Newhaven. It covers natural marshland and reedbeds at the mouth of the River Ouse. Trees and shrubs have already been planted and new cycle ways and footpaths cross the area.

There is an important colony of great crested newts, a protected species, in the reserve. The estuary provides an important link between the seashore to the South and the South Downs to the North.

The area was a gift from the Baker Trust. Development and conservation work has been paid for by a number of organisations including the EU, East Sussex County Council and the Newhaven Economic Partnership.

When you visit please use the car park at Mill Drove, at its junction with the A259 Seaford Road. Remember to keep to the defined footpaths when you are exploring the area.
