'Heart of Reeds' – art in public places

'Heart of reeds' in Lewes
'Heart of reeds' in Lewes

Description of art project

Visitors can enjoy this reed bed in the centre of Lewes. The design of the 'Heart of Reeds' is inspired by the patterns of flow from the human heart.

The site is fully accessible via boardwalks and paths, and incorporates a viewing mound and pond dipping platform. Sluices are used to raise or lower water levels through the reeds and out into the water meadows.

Constructed in 2005 on land reclaimed from former railway sidings, the reed bed has been designated an important urban fringe Local Nature Reserve. The reeds will take 3 to 5 years to become fully established and will be managed to maintain biodiversity.
