Everyone who works for East Sussex County Council follows a set of common standards which form a generic part of their job description, and are part of every employee's contract of employment. These standards apply whatever their duties, responsibilities or pay grade.
We'll give you more information and guidance about these matters when you start work with us.
Our People Charter
Our ‘People Charter' describes in brief the responsibilities and expectations of the employee to the employer, and vice versa:
The following will help you to understand how you will be expected to meet the Charter standards in practice.
Equality and diversity
At work, all Council employees should consistently apply the principles of promoting equal opportunity and fairness for all.
Customer care
All staff are expected to follow our corporate customer care standards. These apply when dealing with either customers or colleagues. Some departments operate additional standards.
Active participation
Staff are expected to take a constructive part in relevant meetings such as:
- team meetings
- review meetings during the first year in your job
- the appraisal process – this starts after your first year with us. Where applicable you will need to set and achieve targets in accordance with your departmental business plan, Council objectives and formal appraisal review meetings
- regular supervision meetings – these take place with your line manager at four to six week intervals. This is your chance to discuss work related matters, raise any problems and ask for support if you need it.
Some departments have formal supervision policies and your line manager will tell you about these when you start work with us.
Continuing training and development
The Council offers a wide range of training opportunities. Each employee needs to make the most of their own potential, and ensure the efficient and effective delivery of Council services.
We expect staff to show a commitment to continuous personal development, through training and by taking other learning opportunities that arise.
Policies underpinning your contract
All employees are expected to conduct themselves and carry out their work in accordance with our policies and procedures on employment, health and safety and standards of behaviour.
Managing data and records
You are expected to handle information requests and manage data and records in accordance with our policies and guidance on Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
Managing staff, and personal development for managers
If your job involves managing other people, whatever the grade of your post, you will be required to:
- use our Management and Leadership Standards to develop your personal skills in these areas
- ensure the effective recruitment, selection and induction of staff
- effectively manage performance, attendance and organisational change
Managers should do this in accordance with the relevant policies, guidance and advice.
