Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to gain job-specific skills while working alongside experienced staff.
As part of an apprenticeship, you will undertake qualifications with a local training provider and have a mentor or supervisor in the workplace to support you.
Apprenticeships are a great way to start your career, but although you must be at least 16 there is no upper age limit and you can do it at any time of life. Find out more general information on:
How can a Council apprenticeship help with future employment?
An apprenticeship will give you the knowledge, skills and experience you need to apply for a job in the area you have trained in.
At the end of your Council apprenticeship contract, if you have performed well, you should be in a good position to apply for any related positions that are being advertised at the Council.
How long is a Council apprenticeship?
Most intermediate apprenticeships take one year to complete so you will be on a one year contract. If you have been successful in your first year, you can talk to your manager about extending your contract to do an advanced apprenticeship.
Accounting, civil engineering and ICT are all taken at advanced level and involve a two year contract. If higher level apprenticeships are available in accounting, you can talk to your manager about the possibility of extending your contract.
Who can apply?
Anyone living in England, over 16 and not in full-time education can apply to be an apprentice.
The Council offers apprenticeship training in various council departments.
You must be able to complete qualifications at Level 2 and – if you're doing an Accounting, Civil Engineering or ICT apprenticeship – at Level 3.
How do I apply for a Council apprenticeship?
You apply for Council apprenticeships online:
Each apprenticeship vacancy listing has an ‘apply now' link to start your application process.
If you've applied online with us before – just log in with your registered email address and password.
If you haven't applied for a post with us before - you'll need to register first.
You can then access an application form and application pack for your chosen apprenticeship. The pack includes a job description and person specification.
Remember, it is important to show how you meet the essential and desirable criteria in the apprenticeship job description and person specification.
You can tell us about skills you may have gained from community and voluntary work, leisure interests, school or college, past employment and your home life.
If there aren't any current appreticeship vacancies, you can sign up for job email alerts using 'apprenticeship' as the key word.
What happens next?
If your application is successful, you will be contacted and asked to attend an interview.
At the interview you will be asked different questions relating to the apprenticeship job description and person specification, and you may be given a simple task to complete that relates to the job.
