Workplace training at the Council

There are lots of ways we can help develop your career, by offering on-the-job training opportunities for staff and the community:

Work experience for students

If you are at school or college and you would like to get work experience, contact your school's work experience co-ordinator, or find out about opportunities at the County Council:

Or, if you are studying a social care degree and you are interested in getting work experience in adult social care, get in touch with one of our adult social care team.

Apprenticeships

With more and more employers demanding on-the-job experience, our apprenticeship scheme gives young people a chance to learn real-life skills.

Apprenticeships are a great way to start your career. They give you the opportunity to learn and train while working alongside experienced staff. Plus, employers get to access a wealth of new workplace talent.

Secondments and job swaps

There is a Council scheme where existing employees can try out a different job (a secondment), or swap jobs for a set period. This helps us to improve services by developing the skills of our workforce and enhances cross-department working. While secondments and job swaps offer staff the:

  • chance to develop new skills and knowledge
  • opportunity to take on more challenging responsibilities
  • potential for career development.

Trainee social workers

There is no trainee scheme for external applicants but if you are interested in social care experience to enhance your chances of obtaining a place on a social work course you may apply for unqualified posts.
