Vehicle entry requirements at Household Waste Recycling Sites
This page lists the types of vehicle that need a permit to dispose of household waste at our Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS).

Vehicles that need a permit
You will need to apply for an entry permit to dispose of household waste at a HWRS if your vehicle is:
- designed to carry goods and not people
- a van or other commercial type vehicle with no rear seats, eg Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter or similar
- a 4x4 pick-up with open or covered body, eg Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger or similar
- sign written
- a single axle trailer over 4ft in length (see below for restrictions on trailer sizes at individual sites).
Vehicles that do not need a permit
You do not need an entry permit to dispose of household waste at a HWRS if your vehicle is a:
- private car, eg saloon, estate or hatchback
- 4x4 with rear seats and fully glazed windows, eg Toyota Rav 4, VW Touareg or similar
- people carrier with rear seats
- single axle trailer less than 4ft in length
- a hired vehicle (see below for restrictions).
Banned vehicles
You are not permitted to dispose of household waste at a HWRS if your vehicle is:
- over 3.5 tonnes
- a commercial vehicle with a Luton, flatbed or tipper body
- a trailer more than 8ft in length (see other trailer restrictions below).
Trailers (measurements do not include the towbar)
Single axle trailers are permitted at all sites except Forest Row.
Single axle trailers up to 4ft in length are accepted at:
- Hailsham
- Mountfield
- Wadhurst.
Single axle trailers up to 6ft in length are accepted at:
- Crowborough
- Eastbourne
- Hastings
- Heathfield
- Lewes
- Newhaven
- Seaford.
Single axle trailers up to 8ft in length are accepted at the following site mid-week only (single axle trailers up to 6ft in length are allowed at any time):
Hire vehicles
Residents using hire vehicles to dispose of household waste need to contact us at least 24 hours before a visit. You will need to complete a declaration form when you arrive at the recycling site and provide identification and a copy of the hire agreement.
