Sustainability Appraisal

Under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, all local Development Plan Documents (DPDs) must be subjected to a Sustainability Appraisal (SA).

This is carried out to assess whether proposed plans and policies meet sustainable development objectives, such as promoting waste as a resource and reducing the effects of minerals extraction on the environment.

SAs ensure that social, economic and environmental considerations are taken into account when plans are prepared.

The key stages of sustainability appraisal are:

  • Stage A – setting the context and objectives, establishing the baseline and deciding the scope
  • Stage B – developing and refining options and assessing effects
  • Stage C – preparing the Sustainability Appraisal Report
  • Stage D – consulting on the SA report
  • Stage E – monitoring the significant effects of implementing the DPD.
