Sustainability Appraisal
Under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, all local Development Plan Documents (DPDs) and Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPGs) must be subjected to a Sustainability Appraisal (SA).
This is carried out to assess whether proposed plans and policies meet sustainable development objectives, such as promoting waste as a resource and reducing the effects of minerals extraction on the environment.
SAs ensure that social, economic and environmental considerations are taken into account when plans are prepared.
The key stages of sustainability appraisal are:
- Stage A – setting the context and objectives, establishing the baseline and deciding the scope
- Stage B – developing and refining options and assessing effects
- Stage C – preparing the Sustainability Appraisal Report
- Stage D – consulting on the preferred option of the DPD and SA report
- Stage E – monitoring the significant effects of implementing the DPD.
Waste and Minerals Sustainability Appraisal consultation
We have now completed Stage A, the scoping stage of the Sustainability Appraisal for our Waste and Minerals Core Strategy and Mineral Site Development Plan Document.
A draft scoping report was available for consultation between 19 March – 23 April 2007. Find out more about the Waste and Minerals Sustainability Appraisal scoping report.
All DPDs within our Waste and Minerals Development Framework (WMDF) must be assessed through the SA process.
