Sub-regional planning policy

Before the 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act, sub-regional planning policy was contained within structure plans prepared by county councils. These plans provided a framework of strategic planning policies, using national and regional policy to guide the preparation of more detailed local plans.

Under the new act, structure plans were abolished and much of the sub-regional guidance was incorporated into regional strategies.

Planning at a larger than local scale will be carried out by local authorities choosing to work together on a voluntary basis.
