Regional planning policy
Regional spatial strategies (RSS)
Under the 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act, existing regional planning guidance is being replaced by regional spatial strategies (RSS). As well as setting future housing targets for local districts and policies for the whole region, the RSS may also contain more detailed sub-regional guidance.
RSS will be drafted and applied by regional planning bodies (RPB) and will form part of the development plan for any area.
Consultations and an examination in public will take place before an RSS is published in its final form by the government. RPBs will also review and monitor how the strategies are put into effect, reporting annually.
The existing Regional Planning Guidance for the South East (RPG9) has become the region's RSS. This includes the chapters that were amended after this guidance was issued in 2001.

South East Plan
The South East's regional spatial strategy was reviewed by South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA) and submitted to the government in March 2006 as the draft South East Plan.
When the final version of the South East Plan is approved by the government, it will replace RPG9.
