Local planning policy

Before the 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act, district and borough councils (and for minerals and waste, county councils) were responsible for preparing local plans.

Under the new system:

Some plans and policies have been 'saved' and continue to be part of the development plan for a certain period or until they are replaced by a new type of plan. Read more about these changeover arrangements.

WMDF and LDF will contain:

As part of the development plan, DPDs must be consistent with the regional spatial strategy and will be subject to an independent public examination. After the examination, the independent planning inspector produces a report recommending the changes the local planning authority must make.
