Changeover arrangements

Arrangements have been made to help the change over to the new planning system and make sure there are no gaps in coverage of development plan policies. Under these arrangements, old style plans can be 'saved'. Saved plans or policies remain part of the formal development plan for the area for the saved period, or until they are replaced by a new style of plan.

Plans that had already been adopted when the new act came into force were automatically saved for three years, until September 2007. Some policies in these plans have been saved beyond this date by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (SoS). These policies will remain in force and part of the development plan until they are replaced by a new style of plan.

Plans currently in this situation:

Plans that were being prepared under the old system and had reached an advanced stage when the act came into force, will be adopted under the old system. They will then become saved for three years from their date of adoption.
