Minerals Local Plan

The Minerals Local Plan (MLP) has been prepared jointly with Brighton & Hove City Council.

In December 2006, we submitted an Annual Monitoring Report to Government (under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004), recommending that all the policies set out in the current plan be saved until the new Waste and Minerals Core Strategy and Minerals Sites Development Plan Document are adopted. This is expected to be in 2011.

The Government made their decision on this in September 2007 and agreed that all the policies in the Minerals Local Plan should be saved until replaced by Development Plan Documents (DPD) within the Waste & Minerals Development Framework (WMDF).

Minerals in East Sussex include clay, chalk, sand and gravel and gypsum. These are important resources which contribute to the economy and provide essential raw materials to the construction and other industries.

Extraction and processing can have significant impact on the environment and the Plan includes details of how minerals sites should be restored and reused. The MLP aims to balance the demand for minerals against the need to protect the environment and quality of life.
