Development plans

A Development Plan is made up of a number of individual plans. These set out the planning policies for the future development and conservation of an area. Generally, planning decisions must agree with the development plan. Development plans therefore give developers and local people clear guidance on types of acceptable development.

The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 made significant changes to the individual plans make up the development plan for an area.

Until then, old-style plans and policies can be 'saved' for a specific time. These will remain part of a formal development plan for the saved period or until they are replaced by a new style of plan. Read more about the changeover arrangements.

Under the old system, all local plan policies had to follow the structure plan. New style local development frameworks and minerals and waste development frameworks will be prepared in line with the regional spatial strategy.
