On 23 October 2008, planning permission was granted to Southern Water for a new treatment works and sludge recycling centre at Lower Hoddern Farm, Peacehaven. This followed a satisfactory legal undertaking.
The application included:
- an 11 kilometre underground tunnel from East Saltdean to Friar's Bay, Peacehaven, plus other connecting tunnels
- a new pumping station on the existing Portobello Treatment Works site at Telscombe Cliffs.

Planning permission
The terms of the planning permission required some detailed schemes to be submitted to us for approval. All the schemes needed to allow the main development to start have been submitted.
