Compulsory Purchase Order – North Quay, Newhaven
Our waste disposal contractor, (Veolia) was negotiating with the owners of the land at North Quay, Newhaven to acquire it for the construction of the Energy from Waste (EfW) facility.
As agreement with the land owners could not be reached, in February 2007 we made a CPO to acquire the land. This was then submitted to the Secretary of State for confirmation.
On June 3 2008, following our acquisition of a lease for the EfW facility site, and registration with the Land Registry, Cabinet agreed to the withdrawal of the CPO.
The Secretary of State was informed of this decision and on 17 June 2008 notified us that in the circumstances she would not confirm the CPO. As such we are no longer proceeding with the CPO.
Public Inquiry
The Secretary of State decided that a Public Inquiry was needed, before reaching a decision. The Public Inquiry opened on 13 November 2007, at the White Hart Hotel, Lewes and finished on 12 January 2008.
