Surface water management plans

What is a Surface Water Management Plan?

A Surface Water Management Plan (SWMP) is a study to understand the flood risk that arises from local flooding, which is defined by the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 as flooding from surface runoff, groundwater, and ordinary watercourses.

SWMPs are led by a partnership of flood risk management authorities who have responsibilities for aspects of local flooding, including the County Council, local authorities, sewerage undertaker, internal drainage boards and other relevant authorities.

The purpose of a SWMP is to identify what the local flood risk issues are, what options there may be to prevent them or the damage they cause and who should take these options forward. This is presented in an action plan that the partners agree.

Why do we need to prepare Surface Water Management Plans?

Our local flood risk management strategy identifies areas of potential local flood risk in the county.

To begin to understand this local flood risk and identify possible means to manage it, SWMPs and related studies have been commissioned for the areas. On the completion of each study, the published report(s) can be found by clicking on the links corresponding to the individual areas below.
