Volunteer walk or cycle ride leaders
Volunteering as a walk or cycle ride leader is a great way to meet new people, share knowledge in a friendly atmosphere, keep fit and have some fun in the beautiful East Sussex countryside.
Walk or cycle ride leaders make a valuable contribution towards the work that we do. Each year volunteers contribute over 350 guided walks and rides and share their enthusiasm with over 6,500 people.
If you have a route in mind, and would like to volunteer as a walk or cycle ride leader, then we'd like to hear from you.
Who can become a leader?
Anyone can apply up to the age of 85 years. No qualifications or experience are needed as your enthusiasm and ability to get on with other people is more important to us.
We will give you training before you start and provide you with a volunteer handbook (see below).
Our walks and rides
Our walks and cycle rides are published in:
- Exploring East Sussex – a programme of guided walks and environmental events. There are two issues a year: May to September and October to April.
- Cycling East Sussex – guided cycle rides for beginners and improvers. Published once a year, covering April to September.
Both walking and cycling programmes aim to encourage people to get out and explore our countryside, particularly those that may not feel confident walking on their own and cyclists who may be new, beginners or improvers.
Routes are chosen by a variety of people, including council staff, interested individuals and members of other organisations such as the National Trust and Brighton & Hove City Council.
We also encourage leaders to link their routes with public transport where possible.
