Geology

The main geology of Rye Bay is:

  • Wadhurst Clay
  • Cliff End Sandstone
  • Tunbridge Wells Sand
  • Ashdown Beds.

The High Weald is made up of layers of Ashdown and Purbeck Beds above Wadhurst Clay and Tunbridge Wells Sand, found in lower areas.

The rivers Rother, Brede and Tillingham have cut into the sandstone and clay of the High Weald, and broaden out into wide flat-bottomed valleys stretching to the sea.

Along the coast, fossil footprints have been found in the Ashdown Beds rock at Fairlight Cove. Three-toed prints of the Iguanodon dinosaur are visible to walkers along the beach.
