We produce maps of archaeologically sensitive areas to advise the East Sussex District and Borough councils on where planning applications are likely to affect archaeology.
We give advice on the work required to ensure that archaeological remains are recorded and, where possible, preserved.
For information regarding a planning condition or for pre-application advice please contact the Archaeology team.
Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment (PPS 5)
PPS 5 covers planning policy that affects archaeology, historic areas, buildings and landscapes. It aims to modernise heritage planning guidance and bring it in line with wider changes to planning legislation and national best practice
This statement is accompanied by an Historic Environment Planning Practice Guide which details how the policies in the PPS can be applied.
PPS 5 sets the framework in which our Archaeology Section and Local Planning Authorities in general will be able to manage, conserve, enhance and make accessible the historic environment of East Sussex.
