Qualifications
There are a number of qualifications for TAs, ranging from Modern Apprenticeships and National Vocational Qualifications to Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status. Some TAs can go on to become fully qualified teachers.
For further information and guidance about the range of accredited qualifications available visit the Training and development agency for schools.
Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status (HLTA)
HLTAs are senior support staff with greater responsibility for enhancing teaching and learning in class. HLTA is a status not a qualification and you have to have at least two years experience as a TA or in a related post before you can apply to be assessed for the status.
To achieve the status you must also have a level 2 equivalent qualification (equivalent to GSCE or O’ level grade A-C) in literacy and numeracy – see our School Improvement Service pages on literacy and numeracy qualifications. You can find a test centre or test your skills at the Move On website.
Find out what HLTA could mean to you – go to the Higher Level Teaching Assistant website.
Funding and applications
In East Sussex, funding is available for TAs wanting to undertake training or preparation for assessment for the HLTA status.
Applications may be submitted at any time, and will be considered by a selection panel which meets periodically throughout the year. Full details, including application forms and the dates of the next selection meeting, are available on the HLTA page of the CfBT website.
