Exams and tests at school
National tests
All pupils take national tests at ages seven, 11 and 14. These Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are administered by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).
After age 14 secondary pupils at different schools can take different tests. The tests they take will depend on the subjects they are studying and the exam board that the school has chosen. Each exam board will produce their own test papers and teachers might adapt lessons accordingly.
To find out more about what to expect for your child, and how you can help, visit the QCA website and the DCSF Parent Centre. On both sites you can find information according to the age of your child.
Examination and test dates
Tests at ages seven, 11 and 14
Tests at seven and 11 normally take place in mid-May, and tests at age 14 in mid-summer. Dates are published well in advance on the tests page of the QCA website. You can also call the QCA or call their enquiry line, phone: 020 7509 5556.
