Going to secondary school

Latest: Did you miss the 14 November deadline for secondary school applications starting in September 2009? You can still make a late application – download the admissions booklet and application form below.

All our secondary schools are co-educational, apart from two single-sex schools in Hastings. For details of secondary schools in East Sussex please use our school search.

For independent help, advice and support please call the East Sussex parents' helpline.

There are some circumstances below where you should contact the School Admissions team.

Starting secondary school in September 2009

If your child is at a state-run (a ‘maintained’) junior or primary school in East Sussex but will be transferring to secondary education in the next school year, we will automatically send you an application form and booklet. These are sent to you in the September of their last year of primary education, when they are in the first term of Year 6.

Applications for entry in September 2009

The final closing date for applications to start secondary school in 2009 passed on 14 November 2008. If you missed the deadline, for example because you have just moved to East Sussex, you can still apply for a place.

We will try to allocate a place at one of your preferred schools. Where this is not possible we will allocate a place at the school nearest to your home address that has places available.

You can download and send us your application using the links below, or contact the Admissions Team for copies of the application form and booklet to be sent by post.

Your application

The booklet contains details about schools in East Sussex and how to apply for a school place.

The key dates in the admissions process are in our timetable for 2009 secondary school admissions.

Changing schools during the academic year

If you need to change schools in the middle of the school year or during a term, you might find it helpful to visit your preferred schools to see what the school can offer your child and whether there are spaces available in your child’s age group.

If the school is full, please read the admissions booklet for 2008–09, complete the following form and return it to the School Admissions team, who will then discuss your application with the school:

It is important that you read the booklet before completing the form – it includes helpful guidance on the following:

  • how to apply for a school place
  • how to fill in the form
  • how we will deal with your application.

If you are unable to download the booklet we can send you a copy. We can also help if English is not your first language.

Living outside East Sussex and starting Year 7 in September 2009

If you would like your child to start secondary school in September but currently live outside East Sussex, you should apply through the local authority where you live.

They will send your completed application to the East Sussex School Admissions team for consideration. Your Local Authority will contact you in due course to inform you where your child has been allocated a place.

Moving on from a non-maintained school

If you live in East Sussex and your child has been attending a private or voluntary run primary or junior school (a ‘non-maintained school’) but you would like them to join a maintained secondary school contact the School Admissions team.
