Building work has started on a new secondary school in Bexhill, due to open in September 2010.

A new secondary school for Bexhill

The Government is running a national Building Schools for the Future programme. Their aim is to rebuild or renew every secondary school in England over a 10–15 year period. The new school in Bexhill is part of this programme.

Plans for the school

Plans include a new school facility at Gunters Lane and a new vocational skill centre at the Down Road site.

We have tried to include everyone who has an interest in Bexhill High School in our consultations. This includes parents, teachers, pupils, governors and the local community.

To see draft plans for the school, go to Bexhill High School newsletter and design plans.

The cost

The total planned cost is £37.4 million - £33 million is provided by the Building Schools for the Future programme and £4.4 million is provided by us.

School admissions

The new school will accommodate 1,650 11–16 year old pupils. The skill centre will provide separate learning accommodation for specialist diplomas for approxiamtely 300 14–19 year old pupils.

Special facilities

Plans include a special autism facility at the school to provide support to 22 pupils with additional needs.

Planning and construction timetable

The East Sussex County Council Planning Committee approved the plans for the new school in September 2008. For information read the meeting papers for the Planning Committee on 22 September 2008.

Planning permission was granted subject to certain highway works being completed, including:

  • a toucan crossing on Gunter’s Lane
  • improvements to bus stops
  • improvements to the raised footway and pedestrian barrier on Gunters Lane
  • a new cycle link between Canada Way and Deans Drive
  • traffic counts before and after the opening of the school in agreed locations.

Building work is planned to begin late 2008. We plan to open the new school in time for the 2010 academic year.
