School governor selection criteria
Whilst schools are keen to welcome applications from all areas of society, there are certain criteria that have to be met before your application can be accepted.
Application criteria
You must not be:
- disqualified or restricted from working with children or young people
- disqualified from being a school teacher or employee, or from being the proprietor of an independent school
- subject to a disqualification order under the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000
- detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
- bankrupt.
You also must not have:
- been removed from the position of a charity trustee on the grounds of any misconduct or mismanagement
- been fined, in the last five years, for causing a nuisance or disturbance on education premises.
There are specific criteria in place if you have ever been in prison. You must not have:
- been sentenced to three months or more in prison, without the option of a fine, within the last five years
- received a prison sentence of two and a half years or more in the last 20 years
- received a prison sentence of more than five years.
Finally, you have to be:
- over 18 years old
- willing to submit to a Criminal Records Bureau check.
