Family learning – help for providers
What is family learning?
Family learning covers activities and programmes where parents, grandparents, children and carers are involved in learning. It includes:
- literacy and numeracy
- activities for families
- courses in parenting – such as playing with your child, helping your children learn, dealing with your child’s school.
There are different learning methods. Adults and children can learn together at the same time, and sometimes the different age groups meet separately to learn and understand more about living, communicating and taking care of each other.
We promote non-traditional approaches to encourage people into first-rung and other higher learning opportunities. Potential providers from the voluntary and statutory sectors who want to organise a course or taster session can apply for funding from our Family Learning Team.
Organising a project
Our family learning handbook includes all the forms you need to run a course or project from start to finish.
Completing these forms will make sure that your project complies with the Common Inspection Framework (CIF) and the requirements of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), who are the funding body.
To get a copy of the handbook, or if you need help to complete the paperwork and work up your ideas, please contact our Family Learning Team.
Family Learning Forum
Anyone involved in family learning in East Sussex can join the Family Learning Forum.
The forum meets five times during the academic year to share information, good practice, and new developments, evaluate projects and explore joint funding opportunities.
Professionals from a wide range of areas are involved in the forum, including:
- libraries and museums
- primary, secondary and extended schools
- further education and community colleges
- early years
- children’s centres
- excellence cluster
- voluntary sector
- independent workers.
