Reporting underage sales

There are age limits for the sale of:

  • alcohol
  • cigarettes
  • knives and offensive weapons
  • spray paints
  • fireworks
  • videos, computer games and DVDs
  • butane gas and solvents.

A full list of age limits and the maximum penalties for selling age-restricted goods is in the age restricted products leaflet by Trading Standards.

How to report underage sales

If you think that a business has been selling any of these items to someone who is underage, you can report them to Trading Standards. You will need to give us:

  • the name and address of the business you are reporting
  • details of when the underage sale was made, what was bought and how old you think the buyer was.

To report an underage sale contact Trading Standards.

Help us to enforce the law

To help identify businesses that are illegally selling goods to underage people we need volunteers aged 14 to 16½. If you want to help, apply to be a volunteer purchaser.
