East Sussex Registration Service: Civil ceremonies

The civil ceremony is a simple and meaningful one. A short introduction is given by the superintendent registrar. You then exchange declarations and vows to each other together with the exchange or the giving of a ring, if you wish. Once the ceremony is over you will both be asked to check and sign the register. Two witnesses will also be required to sign the register.

On the day

Once you and all your guests have arrived at the venue for your marriage the registrar will see the couple before the ceremony to check the details that are to be entered into the register.

These include:

  • your own details
  • the full names and occupations of your fathers
  • the names of your witnesses
  • how many copies of the marriage certificate you require.

Your guests will be shown into the marriage room where you will join them, or you can greet them as they enter.
